The history and secrets of Zildjian

Zildjian, the company that makes drum cymbals, controls 65% of the world’s cymbal market, and reported more than $50m in revenues last year.  What you might not know is that Zildjian is almost 400 years old, and is still run as a family business, with Craigie Zildjian and sister Debbie Zildjian currently running the ship.

Founded in in Istanbul in 1623 (3 years after pilgrims landed an Plymouth Rock), the company has outlasted countries, empires, and survived the Great Depression and two world wars.

The interesting part is that Zildjian is much more than just a business – follow Kim Gittleson of the BBC’s  fascinating look into the oldest family firm in the USA here.
